How Should America Handle Illegal Immigration? Essay -- American Histo

200 years prior the absolute first migrants showed up on American soil. The United States built up itself upon the idea of outsiders yet an incredible discussion of how migration approaches will produce results goes on still today. The debate: by what means should the United States and Mexico handle lawful and illicit migration? An ever increasing number of migrants show up unlawfully in scan for a superior life. In simply the most recent fifteen years, a huge increment of illicit workers went to the United States. They accept 700,000 for every year† (Nadadur 1040). An expected of 11.9 million altogether (Galston Pickus and Skerry 89). Numerous Americans feel the inverse, as though the American Dream will be lost to be decided with such huge numbers of workers. The two purposes of perspectives increment to the power of the discussion. The United States will consistently stand tall, known as a country shaped by outsiders traveling towards a superior life. The inquiry; how does t his extraordinary country offset the truth with the need to maintain opportunity of decision and national principle of law? Numerous clever and yearning individuals want to carry their abilities and endowments to America. Seldom does a nation offer the benefits that the United States offers. Regardless of whether it is towards instruction or work the open doors are boundless. We as Americans have the opportunity to pick and to make the best of our future. Just in America where we can fantasy about being a â€Å"nobody† yet in the end we can turn into a â€Å"somebody†. Over the historical backdrop of the United States we have seen such models. Hakeem Olajuwon was conceived January 21, 1963 in Nigeria. Nicknamed, â€Å"The Dream,† Olajuwon drove the Rockets to the NBA title in 1994 and 1995, and was casted a ballot the league’s most important player for the 1993-94 season. â€Å"The Dream† turned into an Ame... ...unfortunate, and massively expensive in human terms. Neighborhoods would be destroyed, families would be isolated, and another and sorry part in American race relations would be written† (90) The American individuals simply like the Mexican individuals press forward in the excursion of joy and keep on looking for a superior personal satisfaction. The constitution of the United States of America states, â€Å"We the People of the United States, so as to shape a progressively impeccable Union, build up Justice, protect household Tranquility, accommodate the basic guard, advance the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do appoint and set up this Constitution for the United States of America.† With ethics and guidelines like these controlling the United States, a superior personal satisfaction and joy will be found by both the American and Mexican individuals.

Isolation in the Scarlet Letter Essay Example

Disconnection in the Scarlet Letter Essay All through the novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne underscores the unpredictable topics of disengagement and distance. Utilizing an assortment of scholarly strategies and portrayals of feelings and nature, Hawthorne can completely delineate the internal sentiments of hurt endured by the focal characters because of extreme dejection and confinement. This, consequently, further adds to the general bleak and critical climate of the work. Disengagement and distance, two types of painful antagonism, are experienced by the key figures, Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth, each because of various circumstances and to different degrees. In general, The Scarlet Letter is essentially worried about the contemplations and sentiments of Hester Prynne. Hester, being a pariah of society, encounters the most clear and obvious type of confinement and estrangement. As an image of transgression, Hester is seen by the severe Puritanical town as a pariah, a nearness of wickedness, and, eventually, one who is disdained by God. The towns brutal judgment of Hester is uncovered through a neighborhood womans remark, †¦at the exceptionally least, they ought to have put the brand of hot iron on Hester Prynnes temple (36). Despite the fact that this desperate mentality towards Hester does in the end improve, because of her numerous generous works for poor people, she never really escapes the sentiments of forlornness and isolation present in her life. This reality is additionally worried by Hawthornes prohibition of all discussion and discoursed, an utilization of setting and structure, in section five to show that Hester has positively no correspondence with the world past her infrequent outings to town to get and convey weaving orders. Depicted as dim and uncertain. The woods, interestingly, furnishes Hester with an isolated living space wherein she may look for truth and break the glares of mankind, however at the same time dejected and alone (54). An increasingly private and concealed sentiment of separation and estrangement is passed on through Arthur Dimmesdale. Dissimilar to Hester, who has been tossed into an existence of disheartening by society, Dimmesdale exacts this destruction upon himself . Dimmesdale, incapable and reluctant to openly uncover his wrongdoing, keeps on being spooky by his own blame, and thusly feels internal seclusion towards mankind. Incomprehensibly, Dimmesdale sees himself as a malicious rascal and rebuffed himself with every day misuse and starvation. At long last, when Dimmesdale at long last releases his blame and disgrace, he surrenders to affliction and bites the dust, feeling for the absolute first time, genuine satisfaction and harmony. As the iconoclastic vengeance looking for antagonist of the novel, Roger Chillingworth experiences the most covered and darken type of distance and seclusion. Not exclusively is he truly isolated from his friend, Hester, and the townspeople, who presume detestable intercession, but at the same time is intellectually confined from himself. To display this change, Hawthorne communicates the character of Roger Chillingworth principally through private consideration; Chillingworth uncovered his actual self just through his contemplations. With special case to Hester, Chillingworth addresses no other individual about his arrangements or intentions. Following his pledge to reveal Hesters mystery darling, Chillingworth gradually starts to lose his actual character to the fiend. Such unadulterated insidiousness causes Chillingworth to in the end pull back from his earlier life and seclude himself to live in a world, which through his eyes, just contains sharpness and abhor. In spite of the fact that Hester, Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth all experience estrangement and separation, each bears an alternate perspective and to different degrees. Hester is estranged from her individual man and is totally cut off from an existence of standard and ordinariness. Then again, Dimmesdale, basically the towns open figure, feels alone in the way that he is the sole individual, other than Hester, to truly comprehend the genuine man inside himself. This horrifying injury is solid to the point that it in the end ends his life. Be that as it may, Chillingworth is the character that experiences the most unforgiving and horrifying type of torment. To give up to abhorrence and watch oneself step by step shrink away because of ones own decision is one of the most terrible agonies known to man. Uncovering the vile sides of mankind, The Scarlet Letter communicates the torment and anguish that humankind sets upon one another through misleading laws and its dismissal of adoration and energy for standards and ethical quality. The misery of seclusion and estrangement that Hester and Dimmesdale experience, which legitimately stretches out to Chillingworths trouble, is brought about by the firm conviction, by the town, that they are answerable for the killing of all current sin on natural, however they themselves sin. What's more, Hawthorne clarifies that society, in passing judgment on individuals as per what they themselves accept to be appropriate and moral is, shockingly to profess to be faultless and equivalent to the prevalence of God himself. This ethical difficulty further calls attention to the untruthfulness of mankind and, most importantly, its powerlessness to be valid.

Its something couples have to deal with when they enter a relationship or get married and it can lead to nitpicking. Though this kind of fussy fault-finding usually involves petty, inconsequential issues or tasks, if done on a regular basis, the ramifications to your union can be seriousâ€"ultimately tearing away at the bond in your relationship. The Negative Effects of Nitpicking A relationship like a marriage brings together two people who most likely have different habits and personalities. It can be easy to pick apart aspects of your partner that you dislike or dont agree with. However, this type of criticism does nothing to help the foundation of your relationship. When you point out what one another has or hasnt done or how your spouse said or did something wrong, you may be belittling, embarrassing, and demeaning your partner. Youre also saying that you want the other person to change and that they arent good enough.  Essentially, nitpicking is a sign that you dont fully respect your mate. Even if this isnt your intention, it can be received this way. Though it can start small, especially at first, it can be a  red flag in your marriage. If you continue to nitpick at your spouse, a growing resentment can create a wall between the two of you. Learn to Live With It John Gottman,  Ph.D., founder of an organization that bases relationship advice on research, notes in his book The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work that 69% of relationship problems consists of unsolvable issues.?? These include the little things about your partner that rub you the wrong way and lead to nitpicking. All long-term relationships have issues that involve personality traits or temperamental qualities and can cause perpetual conflict. These unsolvable problems are things you  simply need to learn to live with. Sure, people can make changes and marriage is about adapting to a life together; thats a natural part of it. However, if the little things cause conflict, how can the two of you handle real conflict or the serious issues that will arise? Being overly critical or laying blame on the small stuff can lead to bigger issues and even divorce. Instead of Nitpicking Rather than nitpick your spouse, there are a number of other things you can do. Many of these are seemingly small, but the impact on your relationship can be great. Youll both be happier in the long run if you learn to deal with each others quirks without quarreling. First and foremost, the most important thing you can do is be nice. When you feel like picking out a flaw, turn your own thinking around to simply be kind and show respect. A compliment can be far more helpful. You can also do your best to be supportive of your spouse. Take the time to  listen  about your partners day, feelings, hobby, or whatever they want to talk about. Its another way that you can continue to get to know one another better or try to see your spouses perspective on the issue. Ask yourself if you are expecting perfection. If so, no one will be able to meet your expectations and youll always be disappointed. Its also important to accept that your spouse will have some habits that annoy you. Learn to pick your battles and save your arguments for the big issues (while  fighting fair). No one will promise you that marriage is conflict-free. Its how you handle the conflictsâ€"large and smallâ€"that makes the difference. Before you decide to nitpick, focus on your internal feelings. What is it that you really need? Attention? To be heard, seen, or hugged? Theres a good chance the nitpicking is just a poor attempt to get some other important need met. Finally, if you cant stop nitpicking, acknowledge this as a problem and get help for it. If Youre Being Nitpicked If your spouse nitpicks at you, puts you down, or demeans you, its important that you talk about this issue. It may be a difficult discussion, but its necessary. Describe the hurt and pain you feel from this behavior.  Let your spouse know that when you think youre being nitpicked, you wont overreact but you will say enough and leave the room. Hopefully, after youve done this a few times, your spouse will start to notice their nitpicking behavior. If the nitpicking continues, marriage counseling  may be the best option. When Nitpicking Crosses the Line In some marriages, the level of nitpicking may accelerate into blaming, severe criticism, and hurtful remarks. Its important that you realize when nitpicking crosses the line into abuse.?? Whether its physical abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, or emotional abuse, abusive behavior is never acceptable. If you think youre being abused, please seek professional help immediately. The National Domestic Violence Hotline  is available at  1-800-799-SAFE (7233). How to Recognize Verbal Abuse and Bullying

President Putin, Russia s Current President - 1465 Words

national security. This is the first time this has happened, and it is worrying why Vladimir Putin, Russia’s current president, may have made this accusation (Reuters). It is obvious because of this distrust from Russia that relations between the U.S. and Russia are beginning to deteriorate from previously â€Å"improved† standards. Although there were points where Russo-American political relations were lacking, there were also many other aspects of the relationship that saw improvement after the Cold War. In 1972, before the Cold War had officially ended, the first Moscow Summit was held, in which President Nixon met with Premier Brezhnev. At this meeting, several positive topics were discussed, such as: the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty,†¦show more content†¦They first sought to recover from the stockpiling and threat of mutual destruction caused by the Cold War. America then looked to make Russia decent again through improvements in their government, their social institutions, and their economy (Talbott 156). Another aspect of Russo-American relations that showed a fluctuation in tone were the economic states of the U.S. and Russia before and after the Cold War. Before the Cold War had begun, Russian economic standards had already been on a decline due to the damaging effects of Communism in a global market economy. The years caught up to Russian industry and agriculture, reducing the quality of products that were meant to keep an economy afloat (Rady 17). The U.S. was so afraid of a Communist takeover of Europe that they were prepared to go to â€Å"war† over the matter. Because of Eastern Europe s Warsaw Pact to combat NATO, the U.S. denied access to loans and financial support for them, leaving Russia with one less nation to sponge off of (Rady 16). Later, Russia made an attempt to alter their Communist policies to form a Hungarian-inspired form of Communism, called Goulash Communism. Russia’s rate of import increas ed due to the adoption of this system, and eventually peaked in the 1970s (Rady 21). Any Western items that were imported and sold in Russia at this time were considered to be valuable, and sold at higher prices.

Using Computing Technology For Employee Performance And...

Introduction In a world of rapid technological growth, there are a number of serious issues facing businesses and their employees, and none more so than the ethical dilemma of using technology to ensure that employees are meeting the standards set out by their employer. In this essay, we will focus on our topic of choice, ‘Using computing technology to monitor employee performance and behaviour is just plain wrong.’ There are many ways an employer can use technology to monitor their employees in all aspects of their working life. This includes electronically ‘clocking in out’ at the beginning and end of every shift, using similar technology to track the length of time each worker takes for their lunch or even toilet breaks, up to and†¦show more content†¦We will also look at the impact of social media on the employer/employee relationship. Arguments For Against It is without a doubt a natural human instinct to want privacy. It is a much discussed subject, especially in the age of electronic surveillance, on just how much privacy a citizen is entitled to. Article 8 of The European Convention on Human Rights states that â€Å"Everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence,† with certain provisos attached in the interest of national security and public safety (European Union 1953). However, the wording of this Article clearly implies that in the case of a person’s working life, they do not have this same right to privacy. According to the 2010 Absence and Workplace Health Survey conducted by the Confederation of British Industry, from a total of 180 million sick days taken by UK workers in 2009, approximately 27 million of those were not for genuine illnesses. In 2008, an Australian call centre employee was given disciplinary action after pulling a ‘sickie’ from work, while posting on Facebook that the real reason he wasn’t in work was due to an over-use of alcohol the

Engineering Failure Case Study Free Essays

Failure Analysis at DMRC On July 12th 2009 a metro bridge that was under construction collapsed due to negligence by an office in-charge of the Badarpur Metro line. The failure of the bridge killed 6 and injured another 15 when the pier cap sheared from the connecting pillars. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation took major heat from this incident because the roadway was a major milestone of providing a reliable and easy mean of transportation to the capitol of India. We will write a custom essay sample on Engineering Failure Case Study or any similar topic only for you Order Now The DMRC is considered the most reputed infrastructure organization of India and neglecting roadways to the point where they fail is not an option. During that day the pier cap collapsed causing the collapse of the launching girder, span between p-66 and p-67 piers which had already been erected and pre-stressed, and also segments of the superstructure for the span between p-67 and p-68. The pier cap (p-67) sheared from the connecting point of the pier and pier cap. The top reinforcement of the cantilever beam did not have any development into the pier itself which caused the shear itself. The launching girder has failed due to the failure of the pier cap. This failure also caused the span between piers 67 and 68 causing it to be inclined supported by the ground on one end and the pier cap on the other. With the failure of the pier cap and span between piers the crane used for lifting the launching girder also failed on July 13th 2009. Bending of the crane shows the clear sign of overloading which was caused by not analyzing the amount of stress the crane could handle. The causes of the failure are many and once one portion of the roadway failed it caused a chain reaction to the entire infrastructure collapsing. The pier (p-67) was initially designed as a leg of a portal frame between piers but then was changed to support the pier cap. The same method was used for piers p-66 and p-68. The top reinforcement was poorly engineered; the pier cap had a reinforcement of 36mm diameter and a length of 500mm which was an insufficient bond length for the structure. During the launching operation the launching girder itself developed a crack that was grouted in crack areas and further strengthened by introducing prop or jacketing. During the launching of superstructure 6 segments where lifted and the whole system collapsed when the seventh segment was hooked up for lifting. It was concluded that the failure of the pier cap occurred to the improper jacketing done when a crack had occurred. This was also coupled with inadequate length of support and reinforcement of the cantilever pier cap. The failure of the cranes was the fact that the capacity of 2 cranes where not able to hold the weight of the superstructure which caused the larger 3rd crane to fail. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation sacked the official in charge of the Badarpur Metro line, Vijay Anand for neglecting his duty. Structural designs should have been proof checked by an experienced structural engineer. Also once failure had been observed the structure should have been abandoned and a new structure should have been built. Make shift reinforcement to save a failed structure was a major neglecting issue and engineering failure. The lack of professionalism that lead to the superstructure failure started with trying to fix the failed pier cap and neglecting the fact that the cranes used to lift the structure where not engineered to hold the amount of weight that needed to be supported. The support reinforcement should have been checked by an experienced engineer that should have easily seen the reinforcement issue between the pier and pier cap. The information for this case study was found from www. engineeringcivil. com/theory/civil. engineering-disaster. com and www. thaindian. com. The entire structural failure was found on these sites including who was a fault and why the structure failed. How to cite Engineering Failure Case Study, Free Case study samples

Dancing with diablo an international education in collaboration Essay Example For Students

Dancing with diablo: an international education in collaboration Essay Heres how you meet Diablomundo, rumbles cultural impresario Philip Arnoult of Baltimore Theatre Project, proffering a small brown cup of murky leaves penetrated by a delicately detailed silver straw. A tentative sip draws a dose of pungent South American tea called matea staple of the Argentinean theatre troupe, whose six members constantly circulate the cup among themselves or extend it, like a peace pipe, to visitors. The gesture crosses the awkward language barrier between three company members who havent quite mastered English and myself, an American whose Spanish education began and ended with Sesame Street. Another virtue of the tea is its caffeine kick, which might account for the 15-hour work days typical of Diablomundos 18-week residency with the theatre department and surrounding community of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The residency is split into two installments, the first of which is drawing to a close. Diablomundo spent two of these eight weeks guiding second-year MFA students (including actors and some designers) through a workshop in collaborative theatre, an unfamiliar concept to most of the students. But they dive into a runthrough of their work with candid zeal, donning cloth masks and manipulating wooden poles into a series of images derived from The Royal Hunt of the Sun, Peter Shaffers somber drama about the devastation of Peruvian Incas by 16th-century Spanish explorer Francisco Pizzaro. The Diablomundo company observes from within the piece: Carlos Uriona represents Pizzaro; Ariel Calvis beats a deliberate pace on an upstage drum; and Miriam Gonzalez, Perla Logarzo and Roberto Uriona (Carloss brother) improvise accompaniment on traditional South American wind instruments. Santiago Elder, their designer, joins the audience. Its obvious from the physicality of the piece why Diablomundo isnt unduly hindered by a language gap. In two weeks, the students have learned from their visiting mentors to convey meaning not only with their bodies, but also with their group presence. Its evaporated their egos. One day we talked about focus and the sticks that we used to mean different things, and they spoke to us of how we were the props. I dont think thats a concept American actors really know about. We became other things, recalls Carol Balzli, an acting student. Her eyes were suddenly opened to the value of what Carlos Uriona facetiously calls scene servants: bodies that complete the picture without figuring largely into the plot. Theatre department head Thomas Cooke will direct a professional production of the Shaffer play this spring, which will provide some of the students with the opportunity to transfer their experience to a fully realized production. The lesson in mutual dependence, however, will probably linger beyond next semester; in a depressingly competitive field, the companys example could preserve their sanity. They focused our attention on what the overall group, rather than the individual, was trying to achieve, says Michael Golebiewski, a student who plans to seek work with a collaborative company after college. The students believe most American training programs overlook ensemble work, perhaps because collaboration is difficult to teach. Diablomundo adamantly eschews didactics, and the students laughingly recall their initial frustration with the standard response to pleas for direction: As you wish. Diablomundo members are, in fact, reluctant to even discuss their process for fear of cementing something which has succeeded largely because of its plasticity. Mainly we wanted to show them the way we work as an ensemble, offers Carlos Uriona, a founding member. After a few more rounds of the mate cup, he elaborates. We dont explain the philosophy, we explain the function, and in a way when you explain the function youre explaining the philosophy. We give clues, and let the people follow the clues and find things. Sometimes they are not the things that we found, or we learned. .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e , .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e .postImageUrl , .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e , .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e:hover , .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e:visited , .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e:active { border:0!important; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e:active , .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0050c5c72a6f9cb2e27e46302897bf0e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: SEX EDUCATION EssayThis ephemeral process has been roughly two decades in the making. Diablomundo took seed in Buenos Aires in the 70s, fertilized by the previous decades social forays into cooperative living. Early incarnations of the company drew from the traditions of South Americas gauchos, who performed for their own cattle-herding communities, and from commedia del-larte, an Italian influence which was nearly lost when Strasberg disciples flooded the country during the 1960s. But it was their life-sized, eerily expressive puppets that struck a chord in Argentina, where an oppressive military government menaced the country until 1983; Carlos believes puppets penetrate d their audiences perpetual fear by eliminating direct human interaction. Acclaim for the companys work reached the ears of Philip Arnoult, who in addition to his position as artistic director of the Baltimore Theatre Project is a board member of the International Theatre Institute and an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee. Arnoult and Cooke lured the company to Knoxville for its 1990 and 1992 World Festivals, and Arnoult invited them to perform in Baltimore. This investment of time, claims Arnoult, necessarily preceded Diablomundos U.T. residency. This really wonderful opportunity we have right now is because theres a history with these folks, he offers. Most international work in this country is flavor-of-the-month. Ive even heard people say, Oh, we did Brazil.' With this history behind them, Arnoult proposed a university residency modeled after Diablomundos theatre school in Argentina, which not only teaches puppetry, theatre and music to children from their low-income neighborhood, but also maintains tight relations with the general community. Carlos stresses the practicality of these relationships and their basis in mutual need. We are not good samaritans, he insists. We have our interests in all of this, and in order to build our audience we work in the community. He and his colleagues discovered that if they opened their studio doors during rehearsals, intrigued neighbors would then buy tickets to the finished performances. More important, outspoken supporters were vital to a non-mainstream arts organization under a military regime; unconventional ideas were suspect, and many so-called subversives literally disappeared following complaints to authorities. The best way to protect ourselves was by being deeply connected with the neighbors , because they would speak highly of us, explains Carlos. This organic network was replicated in Knoxville with the aid of an Arts Partners Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Program grant, which seeks to establish long-term links between artists, universities and their communities. Thus, Diablomundo is working with the citys East Neighborhood Center, where underprivileged childrens self-esteem problems are addressed through role-playing. At Jubilee Community Arts, which promotes ethnic and Southern Appalachian arts, they compare notes on reaching out to remote rural communities. Carpetbag Theatre, one of the countrys oldest black companies, solicits their help in creating imagery around monologues and songs. And they remind the University of Tennessee that its resources are desperately needed outside the campus walls. The university is a sort of huge lighthouse, but its isolated, observes Carlos. Its as if the rest are in boats in the ocean and cannot touch it. Literally, there is a gap a geographic and social gap. But its possible for the studen ts to make the move, to reach out there. A native of Tennessee, Arnoult has long been aware of the quiet boundaries that run through Knoxville, as through most college communities. And he agrees with Carlos: Maybe the time and conditions are right to make more connections. Nearby neighborhoods pose the last frontier for a school whose existing connections span the globe. Another MFA workshop is already underway with Elena Jandova, a Bulgarian veteran of New York Citys Living Theatre, and more visitors from other countries are lined up. Cooke, meanwhile, is laying the groundwork for a student internship in Budapest with Hungarian director George Lengyel, an exciting leap for a program whose previous internships have remained within the U.S. As the university extends its educational tendrils over the world, it might only be a matter of time before it comes full circle and discovers that its neighbors dont only have needs; simmering in the Southern city is a rich melange of cultures whose histories could intertwine with the universitys.
