Being overly critical or laying blame on the small stuff can lead to bigger issues and even divorce. Instead of Nitpicking Rather than nitpick your spouse, there are a number of other things you can do. Many of these are seemingly small, but the impact on your relationship can be great. Youll both be happier in the long run if you learn to deal with each others quirks without quarreling. First and foremost, the most important thing you can do is be nice. When you feel like picking out a flaw, turn your own thinking around to simply be kind and show respect. A compliment can be far more helpful. Learn to pick your battles and save your arguments for the big issues (while  fighting fair). No one will promise you that marriage is conflict-free. Its how you handle the conflictsâ€"large and smallâ€"that makes the difference. Before you decide to nitpick, focus on your internal feelings. What is it that you really need? Attention? To be heard, seen, or hugged? Theres a good chance the nitpicking is just a poor attempt to get some other important need met. Finally, if you cant stop nitpicking, acknowledge this as a problem and get help for it. If Youre Being Nitpicked If your spouse nitpicks at you, puts you down, or demeans you, its important that you talk about this issue. It may be a difficult discussion, but its necessary. Describe the hurt and pain you feel from this behavior.  Let your spouse know that when you think youre being nitpicked, you wont overreact but you will say enough and leave the room. Before the Cold War had begun, Russian economic standards had already been on a decline due to the damaging effects of Communism in a global market economy. The U.S. was so afraid of a Communist takeover of Europe that they were prepared to go to â€Å"war† over the matter. Because of Eastern Europe s Warsaw Pact to combat NATO, the U.S. denied access to loans and financial support for them, leaving Russia with one less nation to sponge off of (Rady 16). Later, Russia made an attempt to alter their Communist policies to form a Hungarian-inspired form of Communism, called Goulash Communism. Russia’s rate of import increas ed due to the adoption of this system, and eventually peaked in the 1970s (Rady 21). Failure Analysis at DMRC On July 12th 2009 a metro bridge that was under construction collapsed due to negligence by an office in-charge of the Badarpur Metro line. The failure of the bridge killed 6 and injured another 15 when the pier cap sheared from the connecting pillars. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation took major heat from this incident because the roadway was a major milestone of providing a reliable and easy mean of transportation to the capitol of India. During that day the pier cap collapsed causing the collapse of the launching girder, span between p-66 and p-67 piers which had already been erected and pre-stressed, and also segments of the superstructure for the span between p-67 and p-68. The pier cap (p-67) sheared from the connecting point of the pier and pier cap. The top reinforcement of the cantilever beam did not have any development into the pier itself which caused the shear itself. The launching girder has failed due to the failure of the pier cap. This failure also caused the span between piers 67 and 68 causing it to be inclined supported by the ground on one end and the pier cap on the other. With the failure of the pier cap and span between piers the crane used for lifting the launching girder also failed on July 13th 2009. Bending of the crane shows the clear sign of overloading which was caused by not analyzing the amount of stress the crane could handle. The causes of the failure are many and once one portion of the roadway failed it caused a chain reaction to the entire infrastructure collapsing. The pier (p-67) was initially designed as a leg of a portal frame between piers but then was changed to support the pier cap. The same method was used for piers p-66 and p-68. The top reinforcement was poorly engineered; the pier cap had a reinforcement of 36mm diameter and a length of 500mm which was an insufficient bond length for the structure. During the launching operation the launching girder itself developed a crack that was grouted in crack areas and further strengthened by introducing prop or jacketing. During the launching of superstructure 6 segments where lifted and the whole system collapsed when the seventh segment was hooked up for lifting. It was concluded that the failure of the pier cap occurred to the improper jacketing done when a crack had occurred. This was also coupled with inadequate length of support and reinforcement of the cantilever pier cap. The failure of the cranes was the fact that the capacity of 2 cranes where not able to hold the weight of the superstructure which caused the larger 3rd crane to fail. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation sacked the official in charge of the Badarpur Metro line, Vijay Anand for neglecting his duty. Structural designs should have been proof checked by an experienced structural engineer. Also once failure had been observed the structure should have been abandoned and a new structure should have been built. Make shift reinforcement to save a failed structure was a major neglecting issue and engineering failure. The lack of professionalism that lead to the superstructure failure started with trying to fix the failed pier cap and neglecting the fact that the cranes used to lift the structure where not engineered to hold the amount of weight that needed to be supported. The support reinforcement should have been checked by an experienced engineer that should have easily seen the reinforcement issue between the pier and pier cap. But there were quite a few issues in the implementation process that could have been avoided. I will explain what went well in the implementation process of Jefferson County School System. Background  Jefferson County School System (JCSST) is a school system that educates about 10,000 students in 18 different schools, consisting of fourteen elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. In 1970 administrative computing had begun for doing student scheduling, grade reporting and keeping record of student enrollment. In 1976 the school corporation purchased a DEC PDP 11/34 computer, and the student management applications were converted from the university computer. As the years went by and Technology changed, JCSS has been keeping up. Now they have four Dell servers operating under UNIX and PC’s and Pc’s in all JCSS locations are connected to the system via a high-speed TCP/IP network. Now the newly hired superintendent Dr. Henry Greene and a small task force of Administrators decided that JCSS systems should be replaced with purchased software and it should utilize and integrate database and report-generation software. This task force also suggested that the programming staff of the data processing department would no longer be needed if these recommendations are accomplished. Discussion Everything started off well, a task force of administrators was established and a task of selecting a vendor to provide the hardware and software to replace the current administrative computing applications at JCSS went good. By late March, the new DP Director and her committee had prepared and sent out a 71 page RFP to 23 possible vendors with proposals being submitted by May 4. The RFP stated that â€Å"The proposals will be evaluated on functional requirements, support services, and a 5-year life cycle cost. † This RFP was sent to vendors that would contract to accept responsibility for all the software, support and training services required to install and maintain the new system. After the DP Director evaluated the responses that were submitted, she chose three serious contenders. These contenders were invited to demonstrate their system to the committee. However, the vendors were not told in detail what to show except that they show the major systems. This was mistake number one. I would have wanted these vendors to demonstrate to me what I needed to my specific details. Second, instead of visiting a School that already use a similar system, the committee only visited two sites. And this was because of time and money constraints. The DP Director and the Assistant Principle spent one day at these locations observing the systems and the committee members made calls to others that use the vendors to get their feedback on the systems. Another mistake, what they need the systems for may not be the same as what I need the system for. No matter how they did it, everybody was satisfied with the systems. After a difficult decision the committee selected DSI, even though neither of the vendors systems did exactly what they wanted it to do. Right here I could say that was another mistake but I think just like when you learning how to cook something new, it takes a few times of making it before you get it just the way you want it. You have to figure out how to use the program the way it needs to be used. This is where we go into our next phase, implementation. In December the DSI people helped implement the new system. And as soon as the systems got purchased and put into play at JCSS, the complications started. The first problem was with the financial systems. Most was converted to the new system but the real major problem was installing and using the student management systems. The DP Director planned to follow the cycle of the academic year when implementing the student systems. First, they would transfer all the student demographic information from the present system to the new system’s database. Then they would complete the students’ fall class schedules by the end of the spring semester, as they had been doing with the old system, so that the students’ schedules would be on the new system and ready to go in the fall. During the summer they would pick up the attendance accounting on the new system so it would be ready for the fall. Then they would implement grade reporting so it would be ready for use at the end of the first six-week grading period in the fall. Finally, they would convert the student transcript information from the old system so that fall semester grades could be transferred to the transcripts at the end of the semester. The transferring of the student’s demographic information was a success, but the scheduling was a disaster. I believe this came from a lack of training or should I say the lack of time that was not taken out for the training. DSI was willing to train any and all employees; however, the employees did not take the allotted time to get the training. I think all involved individuals should have made time to get this training. The summer break was a great time to get this completed but if they were not on the payroll, they were not there for training. Fortunately, Paul Faris, the scheduling officer at Roosevelt, was working summer school, and with his assistance they were just able to get all the schedules done two weeks before school started. For preparation for the upcoming fall year, the secretaries and the counselors should have been paid to come to training over the summer. When things started failing a group of names should have been written down so that these could be trained in whatever areas that needed to be improved. This would have helped the process move along more smoothly. It is already over whelming when learning something new in the IT world, but to learn it without the proper training is foolish. Conclusion The real problem was not the vendor that was chosen, it was the lack of user training and there was no user manual available for employees. DSI offered JCSS everything they asked for; they were on time when needed for trouble shooting as well as for training the employees. And remember it was the committee that said they could work well with them (with DSI). Looking back, JCSS chose the right vendor, but without detailed definition of what the system needed, and without the proper training, money constraints and a plan for the project, the system would surely fail.

Corporate Social Responsibility in International companies Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an aspect of business ethics that has assumed significant importance in the age of globalization and expanding markets. The morally-influenced attitudes of consumers in markets have forced many multinational corporations to redefine their definition of social values and rules of their business. There is an increasing realization that corporations are created by the society and that they must give back by serving the society and not merely by making profit from it. New age corporate leaders are replacing the business philosophy of maximization of profits with optimization of profits by shifting their business focus from accountability to shareholders to accountability to stakeholders (including employees, customers, communities, etc.). The growing focus on Corporate Social Responsibility mandates that these stakeholders have a right to expect accountability and transparency as well as social and environmental investment from corporations Ignoring Corporate Social Responsibility would mean endangering business success in the global marketplace. It is unlikely that a company can be ethical while not manifesting a high degree of social and environmental responsibility. Corporate Social Responsibility and responsibility to the environment are themselves large and important issues for any company today. Corporate Social Responsibility and Shared Value Corporate Social responsibility as a concept and a part of the business model started evolving from 1960s and in the Indian context companies like TCS have been using their core competency to the benefit of communities. But as more and more businesses start paying lip service to CSR a need for a new model which would broaden their view was much needed. In an article by Michael E. Porter and Mark R. Kramer in the Harvard Business Review titled The Big Idea: Creating Shared Value, the authors comment on how companies are widely being perceived to be prospering at the expense of the broader community. They go on to say the more business has begun to embrace corporate responsibility, the more it has been blamed for societys failures. Business is caught in a vicious circle. Companies no longer have a broader view when it comes to value creation as they are focused more on short term profit gains. They have started ignoring the aspects which make them sustainable in the long term. Important issues like customer well being, conservation of natural resources and community well being are being overlooked which is leading to a negative perception in the minds of people. According to the authors of the article The solution to this problem lies in the principle of shared value, which involves creating economic value in a way that also creates value for society by addressing its needs and challenges. Businesses must reconnect company success with social progress. Shared value is not social responsibility, philanthropy, or even sustainability, but a new way to achieve economic success. It is not on the margin of what companies do but at the center. We believe that it can give rise to the next major transformation of business thinking CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY NATIONAL COMPANIES ITC ITC is well known for its CSR initiatives in India. Aircel is one of the biggest mobile phone providers in India.  In 2010, they launched the Save our Tiger campaign represented by a tiger cub called Stripey with whom the country promptly fell in love with. Prime time TV could barely be watched without Stripey and his Im abandoned, please save me eyes. Now abruptly, he has disappeared and taken his much talked about cuteness with him. Every TV-watching, net-savvy person in India now knows that only 1411 tigers exist in the wild. We know the company has tied up with WWF to give it some credibility. Some of us wonder if this is an attempt at a badly executed CSR effort. What seems specifically unclear to me remains the ultimate aim of the campaign. Was it started to: (a) create awareness? or (b) create the impression of corporate responsibility? or (c) give people the impression that Aircel is going to take a lead in saving the tiger?  Since Project Tiger,  which has been the most successful program in the 70s lost steam; tiger conservation in India has always had its lulls and rises. There has never been a concentrated effort to increase numbers by putting a check on poaching and habitat destruction. More importantly there has not been much transparency, advocacy or public involvement in the process. Every census releases varying numbers regarding tiger population does Aircel explain how the number 1411 was arrived at? Aircels attempt at gathering public sympathy for the fate of Indias national animal is admirable. The campaign regardless of whether it is CSR or not, is not strategically clever. It does really explain what the company itself is doing to save the tiger apart from throwing Stripey on the airwaves. The campaign would have infinitely more credibility if they could explain  why  it is really, truly important to save the tiger along with its habitat. Mixed Member Proportional Government for Canada

Canada's government system was drafted at the Quebec conference by the so-called â€Å"Fathers of Confederation.† In this system, the Queen of Great Britain has the formal executive power. This in effect made the Canadian government system loosely based on the system being used by the United Kingdom (One Stop Canada, n.d.). Up to now, the Queen is still the head of the state, but just like any other parliamentary democracy, her powers are extremely limited. It is still the Parliament that drafts and approves the country's laws, and then the Queen would give the final approval, so to speak, known as the â€Å"Royal Assent.† Whenever the Queen is not in Canada, the Governor General acts as her representative and performs all her ceremonial and administrative duties. The Governor General is always chosen by the Queen by virtue of the Prime Minister's recommendation. The Governor General normally stays in office for 5 years (One Stop Canada, n.d.). The seat of power lies in the House of Parliament, but specifically, in the House of Commons. It is them who make laws for â€Å"make laws for the peace, order and good government of Canada†, and this includes defence, international policies, criminal law, immigration, border control and customs. They are being elected every 5 years. The present system in the Canada is the single member representation, commonly known also as first past the post or plurality system, wherein the whole country is divided into constituencies (total of 308) and during elections, whoever gets the most number of votes in any particular constituency represents the constituency, and take a single seat in the Parliament (One Stop Canada, n.d.). This system is now being challenged by many because of the presumed â€Å"lack of real representation† of this system. Challenges on the current system and call for a change Statistics from last year's election show that in British Columbia, the Liberal Party gained 77 of the 79 seats for that province with only 58% of the votes, compared to the former ruling Democratic Party who only gained 2 seats despite getting 22% of the vote. (The Democratic Party held 52 seats during the elections before last year, with only 39.5% of the vote.) The Green Party, although they have won 12.5% of the total votes, got no seats at all. This recent election has proven to many that there is a need for a change in their electoral system. Adriane Carr, the British Columbia Green Party leader, leads the initiative to change the existing first-past-the-post system of Canada. Carr launched this initiative to encourage the government to consider her drafted legislation on the mixed member proportional government (Caron, 1999; Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand, 2002). In this proposed system, the benefits both electoral schemes will be combined. A voter will choose a candidate that he or she likes, and at the same time, vote for a party also. In this way, all constituencies will be represented, and at the same time, a proportionate number of seats will also be given to parties receiving a certain percentage of votes, thus, ensuring the representation on the interest or cause that it represents. It was also argued that this new system will maximize voter turnout as all votes will be taken into consideration, unlike the case of a first-past-the-post system where only the winning votes, so to speak, are represented in the parliament. This means that in this system, it would not only mean that the leading party would have seats in the Parliament, but also the minority party or parties, depending on the percentage of votes that they have won (Caron, 1999). This scheme is also said to increase the representation of women in the Parliament. In many countries in the Europe, proportional representation increased women representation by more than 10% (Caron, 1999). Such condition is something being advocated by parties like the Democratic Party in Canada. If proportional representation will be adopted by the Canadian political system, it is forecasted to increase the voter turnout from all levels of election, and at the same time, also increase the representation of other interests in the Parliament. Theoretically, this scheme will make all votes count. The ultimate question: Will this work in Canada? Many advocates of first-past-the-post system believe that if the system is not broken, then, do not fix it. But it appears that while it is not broken, there is a better way of doing it. Even cynics do not disagree with having a need for electoral reform. The current system of electoral process in Canada is based on a winner-take-all principle, which means that the only representation happening is the winning vote, i.e., the popular partisan viewpoint. This also means that the other vote, the losing view, lose their right to political representation. This system has produced a government with a winning party winning majority of seats, without really wining majority of the votes (Gordon, 2003). Canadians have only enjoyed true majority governments, elected by a majority of voters, four times since World War I (Gordon, 2003). The recent election show how â€Å"unrepresented† the voters are. And with the idea that they really have not attained a true majority government yet, still, they are using the first-past-the-post system despite the theoretically good outcome of a proportional representation system, or at least, the mixed member proportion. In all aspects of the theory, from the idea of being truly representative, to the idea of increasing voters' turnout, we know that this mixed member proportion will work. Since World War 1, only four times have the Canadian people attained a true representative majority, which means for only four times have the people been truly represented. This new system will in almost all certainty, reduce the control of the reigning party in the parliament. The system has worked or is still showing potential benefits in all countries which have tried this. Canada will not be an exemption. So, more than just asking if this system will work in Canada, the ultimate question is: Will the existing government give this a chance to work?
